The Omicron COVID-19 variant appears to have found its way to Grande Prairie.

Since December 28, the City of Grande Prairie recorded 80 new COVID-19 cases along with 14 recoveries, bringing the total number of active cases in the city from 47 up to 112.

Across the province, Alberta added 19,738 new cases.

There are now 34,276 active cases in the province. Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of COVID-19 cases in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Between December 28 and January 3, the province had a test positivity rate of 28-30 per cent.

There were 12 new deaths reported to Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19. One of the deaths was someone from Grande Prairie, while another was a child between the age of 5-9.

Alberta Health did not specify which zone the deaths were in today. Information on the death of the child will not be released.
