Alberta adds record 4,752 new COVID-19 cases, Grande Prairie adds 24

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 24 new COVID-19 cases along with one recovery, for January 4, bringing the total number of active cases in the Swan City to 135 (up 23).

The County of Grande Prairie saw five new cases and eight recoveries reported over the past 24 hours, there are now 84 active cases in that region (down three).

Across the province, Alberta added 4,752 new cases, following the completion of 12,694 tests, resulting in a 37.4 positivity rate. The 4,752 new daily cases are a record for the province. There are now 37,196 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of COVID-19 cases in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 4 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 135 active (+23)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 84 active (-3)
  • MD of Greenview: 21 active (+2)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: 11 active (-1)
  • Saddle Hills County: one active (-1)
  • MD of Peace: 22 active (+2)
  • MD of Fairview: eight active (+3)
  • MD of Smoky River: six active (+1)
  • Big Lakes County: 20 active (+3)
  • Clear Hills County: zero active (-)
  • County of Northern Lights: nine active (-)
  • Northern Sunrise County: two active (-)
  • Mackenzie County: 22 active (+7)

Across the province, hospitalizations grew to 470 (up 34), with 72 of those patients in the ICU (up 11). Of those in the hospital, 166 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 48 of the 72 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 48 people are in hospital (up four), three of whom are in the ICU (same).

There were 11 new deaths reported in the province to Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19. One of the 11 deaths was reported in the North Zone.

In Alberta, 89.4 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.3 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
