Enforcement Services reminding property owners to clear snow from sidewalks

Jan 6, 2022 | 8:39 PM

Enforcement Services in Grande Prairie is reminding people it is important to clear sidewalks after a big snowfall.

The message comes as the Grande Prairie region is expected to get hit with another dump of snow over the weekend.

Sgt. Ross Gear with Enforcement Services says a lot of people walk to get around.

“Not everybody uses vehicles, their own personal vehicle, to get around,” he stated.

“There is a responsibility for each homeowner or occupant to clear the snow within 24 hours after a snowfall. This is a great reminder for the citizens of Grande Prairie (to) please do your part, help your neighbours out.”

Gear says it is also important to keep sidewalks clear for those people with mobility issues.

A city bylaw says snow must be cleared within 24 hours after a big snowfall and not doing this could lead to a could lead a $100 fine.

Gear says fines are a last resort for his department.

“We would much rather reach out to the good citizens of Grande Prairie and say please help out your neighbours, help out everybody else, and clear your sidewalk as soon as you are able.”

He adds some complaints have come in this year.

“Our officers have been dispatched and we’ve addressed it. Our first order of business is to reach out to people and say this is the requirement can you please help us out, can you cooperate and do what you can to remove the snow.”

Gear suggests that anyone having trouble clearing snow reach out to neighbours or friends for help.
