Grande Prairie adds 30 new COVID-19 cases, Alberta records record 4,869 cases

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 30 new COVID-19 cases along with five recoveries for January 5, bringing the total number of active cases in the Swan City to 160 (up 25).

The County of Grande Prairie added 11 new cases and three recoveries over the past 24 hours. It now has 92 active cases (up eight).

Alberta broke its daily COVID-19 record for the second straight day on Wednesday. The province is reporting 4,869 new cases, up from 4,752 new cases recorded the previous day.

There 4,869 new cases were found on 12,318 tests completed, resulting in a 39.5 per cent test positivity rate. There are now 39,897 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 5 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 160 active (+25)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 92 active (+8)
  • MD of Greenview: 25 active (+4)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: eight active (-3)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (+1)
  • MD of Peace: 34 active (+12)
  • MD of Fairview: nine active (+1)
  • MD of Smoky River: 10 active (+4)
  • Big Lakes County: 25 active (+5)
  • Clear Hills County: two active (+2)
  • County of Northern Lights: seven active (-2)
  • Northern Sunrise County: two active (-)
  • Mackenzie County: 29 active (+7)

Across the province, hospitalizations increased to 498 (up 28), with 64 of those patients in the ICU (down eight). Of those in the hospital, 170 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 46 of the 64 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 51 people are in hospital (up three), four of whom are in the ICU (up one).

There were three new deaths reported in the province to Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19. In the province, 3,336 people have now died as a result of COVID-19.

To date, 89.5 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.4 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
