COVID update January 7

Grande Prairie records 33 new COVID-19 cases, nine recoveries.

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 33 new COVID-19 cases along with nine recoveries for January 6, bringing the total number of active cases in the Swan City to 184 (up 24).

The County of Grande Prairie added 11 new cases and eight recoveries over the past 24 hours. There are now 95 active cases in that region (up three).

For the third straight day, Alberta broke its daily COVID-19 case record.

The province is reporting 6,257 new cases, up from 4,869 new cases recorded the previous day. There are now 43,414 active cases in the province. There was a test positivity rate of 38.5 per cent.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 5 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 184 active (+24)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 95 active (+3)
  • MD of Greenview: 32 active (+7)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: nine active (+1)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 38 active (+4)
  • MD of Fairview: 10 active (+1)
  • MD of Smoky River: 13 active (+3)
  • Big Lakes County: 30 active (+5)
  • Clear Hills County: four active (+2)
  • County of Northern Lights: seven active (-)
  • Northern Sunrise County: two active (-)
  • Mackenzie County: 40 active (+11)

Across the province, hospitalizations increased to 504 (up six), with 64 of those patients in the ICU (stable). Of those in the hospital, 173 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 47 of the 64 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 51 people are in hospital (up three), four of whom are in the ICU (up one).

There were two new deaths reported in the province to Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19. In the province, 3,338 people have now died as a result of COVID-19.

To date, 89.5 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.4 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
