Local jobless rate lower as national rate hits lowest point since pre COVID-19

The employment region that includes Grande Prairie and the Peace Country now has the second-lowest unemployment rate in Alberta.

Data released by Statistics Canada shows the unemployment rate here was at 6.4 per cent in December, compared to 6.7 per cent in November.

Only the 6.1 per cent unemployment rate recorded in the City of Edmonton for December was lower.

Across the province, the unemployment rate improved to 7.3 per cent from 7.6 per cent in November, as 4,800 fewer Albertans were unemployed in December.

Nationally, the economy added 55,000 jobs last month, as Statistics Canada reported the lowest unemployment rate since before the pandemic.

The agency says the jobless rate edged down to 5.9 per cent for December, compared with 6.0 per cent in November.

The report was based on survey results from the week of December 5-11, before public restrictions were put in place to slow the latest surge in COVID-19 cases.

Since then, many businesses have been forced to temporarily close or curtail operations.
