Grande Prairie records 112 new COVID-19 cases over weekend

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 112 new COVID-19 cases along with 13 recoveries for January 7-9, bringing the total number of active cases in the Swan City to 283 (up 99).

The County of Grande Prairie added 27 new cases and four recoveries over the past 24 hours. There are now 118 active cases in that region (up 23).

The province is reporting 17,557 new cases identified over the weekend. There are now 57,332 active cases in the province an increase of about 14,000 from Friday’s update. There was a test positivity rate of 38.8 per cent.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 9 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 183 active (+99)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 118 active (+23)
  • MD of Greenview: 45 active (+13)
  • Birch Hills County: two active (+1)
  • MD of Spirit River: 10 active (+1)
  • Saddle Hills County: three active (+1)

  • MD of Smoky River: 13 active (-)
  • Big Lakes County: 43 active (+13)
  • Clear Hills County: five active (+1)

Across the province, hospitalizations increased to 635 (up 131), with 72 of those patients in the ICU (up eight). Of those in the hospital, 205 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 47 of the 72 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 63 people are in hospital (up 12), five of whom are in the ICU (up one).

There were six new deaths reported in the province to Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19. In the province, 3,344 people have now died as a result of COVID-19.

To date, 89.6 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.5 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
