Hinshaw confirms shipments of at-home rapid tests delayed

LETHBRIDGE, AB – If you were having a tough time finding at-home COVID-19 rapid tests, it might take a little while longer for supplies to catch up.

Chief Medical Officer of Health Dr. Deena Hinshaw said on Twitter Tuesday that an expected shipment of tests has been delayed.

“Alberta Health has learned that the expected supply of at-home rapid test kits has been delayed from the federal government and manufacturers. Alberta Health is working hard to obtain more supply as soon as possible.”

At this time, it is not known when the delayed tests are expected to arrive.

Earlier this month when the province’s Education Minister announced that in-person K-12 classes would resume on January 10, Adriana LaGrange also stated that 8.6-million at-home rapid COVID-19 tests would be delivered to staff and students with the first shipments expected to arrive this week.

It is unclear to what extent this delay will impact the arrivals of those testing kits.

Due to the overwhelming rise in COVID-19 cases in recent weeks, the Alberta Government recently announced changes to the eligibility for free PCR COVID-19 testing.

They are now available to those who meet specific criteria such as having clinical risk factors for severe outcomes or who live or work in high-risk settings. More details are in the link below.
