Volunteers sought for Grande Prairie Public Library advocacy/support group

Jan 12, 2022 | 6:00 AM

A group that works to help fundraise and advocate for the Grande Prairie Public Library is looking for new members and volunteers.

The Champions of the GPPL started just over a year ago and is a non-profit society that promotes and advocates for library support in the community.

Champions of the GPPL group member Mark Evans says they are looking for citizens who are interested in helping support the public library.

“Now we’re getting to the fun stuff and we’re hoping more people (join),” he added.

“We know there are lots of people who love the library and support the library who might want to come out and get involved in the work we’re doing.”

He says there are many ways people can get involved, whether it be promoting services the library offers, helping with fundraising efforts, or running events to raise awareness of the importance of the local library.

Evans tells EverythingGP they are hosting their first-ever membership drive at the GPPL on Saturday, January 15 from 12 p.m. and 5 p.m. to get more people involved.

“We’re hoping to bring in some more people that maybe have a project or something they would like to do at the library, or an idea for fundraising; or even if they are involved in other community groups or organizations and think they would benefit from learning more about the library and would like to connect with us on that too.”

He says community members of any age can sign up to volunteer with the group.

“Lots of groups like this with libraries will have a subgroup within it that’s for children. So if somebody wanted to take that on and make a Champions group that’s focused around children.”

There are various membership levels for individuals, families, and businesses.
