Grande Prairie records 123 new COVID-19 cases, 69 recoveries over four-day span

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 123 new COVID-19 cases along with 69 recoveries from January 17, bringing the active number of cases to 396 (up 54).

The County of Grande Prairie added 16 new cases and 26 recoveries over the past 24 hours. It now has 105 active cases (down 10).

Local COVID-19 numbers were not released due to technical issues on Monday.

Across Alberta, 3,279 new cases were identified from 8,995 tests over the last 24 hours, resulting in a test positivity rate of 38.8 per cent. There are now 70,223 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 17 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 396 active (+54)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 108 active (-10)
  • MD of Greenview: 57 active (+10)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: 11 active (-1)
  • Saddle Hills County: four active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 57 active (+5)
  • MD of Fairview: 17 active (-)
  • MD of Smoky River: 11 active (-1)
  • Big Lakes County: 75 active (+10)
  • Clear Hills County: five active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: 12 active (-)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 11 active (+3)
  • Mackenzie County: 57 active (-3)

The province also saw hospitalizations increase by 82 to 1,089, while ICU patients increased by 10 from 94 to 104. Of those in the hospital, 301 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 58 of the 94 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 65 people are in hospital (down one), seven of whom are in the ICU (up two).

There were nine more deaths reported by Alberta Health as a result of COVID-19, 3,412 people have now died from COVID-19 in Alberta.

To date, 89.8 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.8 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
