Grande Prairie records 35 new COVID-19 cases, 42 recoveries

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 35 new COVID-19 cases along with 42 recoveries for January 18, bringing the active number of cases to 362 (down seven).

The County of Grande Prairie added 12 new cases and nine recoveries over the past 24 hours. It now has 102 active cases (up two).

Across Alberta, 3,527 new cases were identified from 11,041 tests over the last 24 hours, resulting in a test positivity rate of 33 per cent. There are now 64,519 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 19 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 362 active (-7)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 102 active (-3)
  • MD of Greenview: 53 active (-1)
  • Birch Hills County: zero active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: 11 active (-)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (-2)
  • MD of Peace: 50 active (-4)
  • MD of Fairview: 13 active (+1)
  • MD of Smoky River: nine active (-1)
  • Big Lakes County: 72 active (-2)
  • Clear Hills County: four active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: 13 active (-1)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 16 active (+1)
  • Mackenzie County: 42 active (-3)

The province also saw hospitalizations increase to 1,131(up 30), while ICU patients remained stable at 108. The 1,131 people in hospital with COVID-19 are the most at any time during the pandemic. Of those in the hospital, 303 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 62 of the 108 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 65 people are in hospital (down four), six of whom are in the ICU (stable).

There was eight more deaths reported as a result of COVID-19, bringing the death toll in the province up to 3,421.

To date, 89.5 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.7 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
