New AGLC campaign meant to keep people mindful of alcohol consumption

Jan 20, 2022 | 6:00 AM

A new campaign from Alberta Gaming, Liquor, and Cannabis is meant to help people stay mindful about how much alcohol they are drinking.

DrinkSense launched in December and goes until the end of March.

AGLC director of social responsibility Eric Baich says this came about because of the pandemic being long and challenging for so many plus the start of a new year when people re-examine their habits.

“Something that would be an effective way to remind Albertans that there are many ways that we’re challenged. (like) how we sleep, how we socialize and then drinking alcohol.”

“This campaign basically reminds Albertans the importance of moderation and to showcase some of the tips that people can do when it comes to how to drink in moderation.”

Baich says those tips can include several things.

“Some of them are pretty intuitive. Just knowing your limits and staying within them is always a (good) motto. “

“Always making sure when you are drinking to have food when you drink alcohol. Always take your time and pace yourself out.”

He adds these can also include mixing in drinks of water with alcoholic drinks, setting a budget, designated drivers, and respecting someone else’s choice to not drink.

Baich says DrinkSense is directed at all groups of people.

“Everybody has their own ways they enjoy alcohol for those that chose (to drink). The majority of Albertans do a great job. I think it is almost 90 per cent of Albertans (that) don’t have an issue with alcohol.”

“We want to keep that stat high and make sure people are navigating effectively.”

The campaign includes a website that includes tips for all groups of people, health information, and a quiz on drinking habits
