County reminds residents to only skate on approved stormwater ponds

Jan 21, 2022 | 4:24 PM

The County of Grande Prairie is reminding residents that skating is only permitted on approved stormwater ponds.

Back in December, the County began a one-year pilot program so residents could enjoy winter activities on two approved stormwater ponds. The ponds are located in Whispering Ridge and Westlake.

Ponds in Maple Ridge, Taylor Estates, Carriage Lane, Clairmont and the Sportsplex are not permitted for public use.

While some of the ponds in those areas may look natural and ok to skate on, their purpose is for collecting stormwater runoff, meaning they contain moving water throughout the year. This can create unpredictable skating conditions and unstable ice levels.

Even if recreation has taken place in the past, stormwater ponds not approved means they are not safe for recreation.

Throughout the winter season, Regional Enforcement Services will patrol the ponds and educate the public on the safe use of stormwater ponds.

More information on the ponds can be found at the County’s website.
