Grande Prairie records 57th COVID-19 death

The City of Grande Prairie reported its 57th death as a result of COVID-19 for Thursday, January 20.

The death was one of eight reported by Alberta Health over the last 24 hours. The death in Grande Prairie was a male in his 50s and had no pre-existing conditions. There have been 3,429 deaths as a result of COVID-19 in Alberta.

Meantime, Grande Prairie recorded 40 new COVID-19 cases along with 38 recoveries over the last 24 hours, bringing the active number of cases to 363 (up one).

The County of Grande Prairie added nine new cases and 12 recoveries over the past 24 hours. It now has 99 active cases (down three).

Across Alberta, 3,592 new cases were identified from 10,572 tests over the last 24 hours, resulting in a test positivity rate of 34 per cent. There are now 61,615 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 20 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 363 active (+1)

  • MD of Greenview: 56 active (+3)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (+1)
  • MD of Spirit River: 11 active (-)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 52 active (+2)
  • MD of Fairview: 14 active (+1)
  • MD of Smoky River: 10 active (+1)
  • Big Lakes County: 76 active (+4)
  • Clear Hills County: five active (+1)
  • County of Northern Lights: 14 active (+1)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 13 active (-3)
  • Mackenzie County: 41 active (-1)

The province also saw hospitalizations increase to 1,191 (up 60), while ICU patients fell by one to 107. The 1,191 people in hospital with COVID-19 are the most at any time during the pandemic. Of those in the hospital, 313 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 61 of the 107 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 68 people are in hospital (up three), four of whom are in the ICU (down two).

To date, 89.5 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.7 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
