County records 14th COVID-19 death, Grande Prairie adds 124 new cases over four days

The County of Grande Prairie reported its 14th death as a result of COVID-19, which occurred sometime between January 21-24.

The death was one of 54 reported by Alberta Health over the last four days. There have been 3,483 deaths as a result of COVID-19 in Alberta.

Meantime, the County recorded 48 new COVID-19 cases along with 44 recoveries, bringing the total number of active cases to 102 (up three).

The City of Grande Prairie added 124 new cases and 115 recoveries, it now has 372 active cases (up nine).

Across Alberta, 8,225 new cases were identified from January 21-24 and there was a test positivity rate of 40.5 per cent. There are now 51,157 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of January 24 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 372 active (+9)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 102 active (+3)
  • MD of Greenview: 53 active (+7)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: four active (-4)
  • Saddle Hills County: two active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 66 active (+14)
  • MD of Fairview: 13 active (-1)
  • MD of Smoky River: 10 active (-)
  • Big Lakes County: 78 active (+2)
  • Clear Hills County: nine active (+4)
  • County of Northern Lights: 12 active (-2)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 24 active (+11)
  • Mackenzie County: 44 active (+3)

The province saw hospitalizations over the last four days increase to increase to 1,377 (up 186), while ICU patients grew by four to 111. Of those in the hospital, 331 are unvaccinated, while in the ICU, 51 of the 111 patients are unvaccinated.

In the North Zone, 81 people are in hospital (up 13), four of whom are in the ICU (same).

To date, 89.7 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 85.9 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
