County proceeding to tender $1.3 million La Glace water system project

Jan 26, 2022 | 12:33 PM

The La Glace community water system project will be proceeding to tender.

County of Grande Prairie council directed administration at Monday’s meeting to proceed to tender the project and bring results back to council for approval.

Deputy Reeve Peter Harris tells EverythingGP the $1.3 million project will be used to help with the future growth of the area.

“Currently the quality of the water meets acceptable standards,” he said. “We’re upgrading the system to meet the future demand and to update the service as well so the present system has a longer life.”

The County of Grande Prairie approved $250,000 upgrades to the La Glace Water Treatment System in December 2020, the remaining money will be covered through a grant from the Alberta government’s Strategic Transportation Infrastructure Program.

Harris adds this project has been debated for the last several years.

“We’ve been debating it back and forth for two or three years. What really triggered (the debate) was when the provincial government gave us a grant to go ahead and fund the Water Treatment Plant.”

The County says currently 90 per cent of the planning for the project is complete.

For now, council will wait for the engineering work to be completed before upgrading the plant.
