20-25 centimetres of snow

Winter storm set to bring 15-25 centimetres of snow to Grande Prairie region

Feb 2, 2022 | 12:57 PM

A blanket of snow is set to hit the Grande Prairie region over the next three days.

From February 2-5, the weather office says the Grande Prairie region could see between 15-25 centimetres of snowfall to the ground.

Environment Canada Meteorologist Alyssa Peterson tells EverythingGP the snowstorm is forming because of a mixture of warm and cold air at the Alberta/B.C. border.

“Over the next couple of days, we’re kind of sitting in a clash of the extreme cold we’re seeing right now and a push of warm air that’s coming in from B.C What that’s going to do is create a period of three days where snow constantly falls over Grande Prairie and the Peace Country area,” Peterson explained.

“Every given single day we’re not going to get too much snow, but Thursday to Friday will be when it’s most intense. We’ll be getting at most 25 centimetres (of snow).”

While the snow will be a pain for some, there is light at the end of the storm.

Peterson says by the weekend, the region will see temperatures above the normal for this time of year.

“When we have systems like this, it’s pretty common when these two air masses (warm & cold air) collide, we do get big snowstorms,” Peterson stated. “We’re minus 25 today and minus 20 to minus 10 by Friday, but by the weekend it looks like it’ll warm up heading into this weekend.”

Peterson says she does expect the warm weather arriving on the weekend to last for a while.

“The first half of February pretty much until Valentine’s Day it looks like we’re going to be above normal. It looks to last pretty much until two weeks from now. Normals around this time of year are around minus seven for this time of year in the Peace Region, so anything warmer than minus seven is kind of what we’re looking at.”

Temperatures are expected to range in the low pluses throughout the next two weeks.

Peterson added while the weather is nice, we’re still a long way from spring and that winter isn’t over just yet.
