M.D. of Greenview approves purchase of land for Greenview Industrial Gateway

Feb 3, 2022 | 11:17 AM

The M.D. of Greenview has announced the purchase of 2,000 acres of land from the Alberta government, to be used for the Greenview Industrial Gateway (GIG).

Located south of Grande Prairie, the GIG will be an industrial area focused on the development and processing of natural gas.

Greenview council approved the land purchase during their January 11 meeting, with funding coming from their Economic Development Reserve.

In a release, Reeve Tyler Olsen says the land purchase lays the foundation for long-term prosperity in the region.

The GIG will offer Canada’s first closed-loop industrial system, providing all the infrastructure needed for companies, such as power, rail, process water, and an integrated transportation network.

There will also be the potential for carbon sequestration in a carbon capture hub

Northern Petro Chemical has already signed an agreement to purchase 295 acres of land in the GIG, in order to build a $2.5 billion carbon-neutral ammonia and methanol production facility.

The release also stated that the M.D. is in talks with several other companies that have expressed an interest in being located on the industrial site.
