Potholes popping up in Grande Prairie from unseasonably warm weather

Feb 10, 2022 | 12:13 PM

With the recent stretch of unseasonably warm weather settling in over the past week, potholes have begun to appear on roads throughout Grande Prairie.

In a normal year, crews will usually begin filling potholes in late March and early April, but not in February.

However, Assistant Manager of Transportation and Parks for the City of Grande Prairie Wade Nellis says they have crews working full steam ahead trying to maintain the roads.

“We’re definitely putting out pothole crews earlier than we typically would. We do have crews working around the clock right now, so we’re dedicating resources to this on both our day, afternoon, and night shifts,” explained Nellis.

Because of crews being out earlier than normal, Nellis tells EverythingGP they have had to use substitute material compared to what they normally use in the spring or summertime to fill the potholes.

“Right now, due to the season, we don’t have access to hot ash fault right now. We’re making temporary fixes with cold mix,” he added.

While he couldn’t give a specific number on how many potholes have been filled so far in 2022, Nellis mentioned it is a lot.

“It’s in the hundreds for sure and we do have a lot of reports from the public that we’re addressing at the moment as well,” he said.

With potholes popping up throughout the city, Nellis encourages all Grande Prairie residents to report a pothole to the city if they see one causing issues.

“The best place to report those is through our online GP access portal. They can go on and self-report. That information is sent to our crews to address.”

You can also report potholes by calling the Citizen Contact Centre at 780-538-0300. The target response time is 24 hours from the time a pothole is reported. Pothole reports are entered into a ticketing system and placed on a pothole list distributed to crews for repair.
