Guilty plea in forcible confinement case

A Grande Prairie man has pleaded guilty to several charges after a 2019 arrest connected to a woman being held against her will for several weeks, beaten, and forced to take GHB.

Garrett Kenneth Forrest pleaded guilty to charges of forcible confinement, assault with a weapon, two charges of uttering threats to cause death or bodily harm, administering poison, and theft of a vehicle in Grande Prairie court.

An agreed statement of facts read in court says the woman was held captive for six weeks because the accused said she owed him money.and had cheated on him. The two had been dating prior to this and were involved in a drug crew.

She was also punched, kicked, had a knife held to her throat, made to eat dog food, and had GHB forced down her throat. He also threatened to kill her and a member of her family.

Another man took her from where she was being held to her family’s home and police were notified.

Forrest was given a five-and-a-half-year jail sentence. He had built up four years, three months, and 18 days credit for time already spent in custody, leaving one year, two months, and 15 days left to serve.

In imposing sentence, Queen’s Bench Justice Rod Jerke called it a tragic case before accepting the joint sentencing submission from the Crown and defence counsel.

Federal drug charges against Forrest were withdrawn in February of 2020 because prosecutors did not feel there was enough evidence for a conviction on those counts.

Another person charged at the same time, Matthew Robert Best, was given a five-year sentence after pleading guilty to possession for the purpose of trafficking counts from this case and one other, plus an assault charge from 2018.

Trial dates set for RCMP members charged after fatal shooting near Whitecourt

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set for two RCMP members charged after a fatal shooting near Whitecourt.

A jury trial for Cpl. Randy Stenger and Cst. Jessica Brown is set for November 21 to December 9, 2022 in Edmonton Court of Queen’s Bench.

They will stand trial on charges of manslaughter, aggravated assault and discharging a firearm with intent.

They were both charged after a 31-year-old man died July 3, 2018 at the Chickadee Creek rest stop west of Whitecourt.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team said at the time that on July 2, 2018, there was what they call an attack at a home near Valhalla Centre where the people inside were fired on.

A 31-year-old man fled the area in what ASIRT described as “a very distinctive vehicle.”

An off-duty Mountie spotted what he believed was that vehicle the next day and notified RCMP members who were on duty.

Police saw what they thought was someone asleep inside. A confrontation soon occurred, and the vehicle started moving.

One office fired their service weapon, the other a carbine rifle.

The 31-year-old had several gunshot wounds and died on the scene.

Sentencing in theft, counterfeiting case

Alberta Justice says one of two people charged after an investigation of a theft from an ATM in January 2021 led to the seizure of counterfeit money has been sentenced by a Grande Prairie court.

Kodie Letendre of Grande Prairie was handed a year-and-a-half in jail after pleading guilty to charges of making counterfeit money and possession of stolen property under $5000.

Nine other charges were withdrawn.

RCMP said at the time that a theft from an ATM located at a Grande Prairie business led to an investigation that started January 5 last year.

That investigation led to searches at two Grande Prairie homes.

Fake Canadian and American money, stolen identity documents and bank cards, fake drivers and firearms licenses, and equipment to make these phoney items were all seized.

The second person charged, Veronica Rennie also of Grande Prairie, has a trial scheduled for August 30.
