Final evacuation orders lifted three years after landslide near Fort St. John

More than three years after a steep hillside began to slump toward the banks of the Peace River near Fort St. John, the final evacuations have been lifted in the community nearest the slide.
The Peace River Regional District has rescinded evacuation orders for several properties and stretches of two roads in Old Fort.
The orders were imposed following the first slide in late 2018 that tore out the only road to and from Old Fort and another slide in 2020 that damaged the road again.
A report issued late last year by the Transportation Ministry says further geotechnical studies will be done, but the now-repaired road remains the best option for access to Old Fort’s roughly 50 homes.
