RCMP says shooting threat from U.S. forced Grande Prairie Composite, PWA into hold and secure

Feb 17, 2022 | 3:38 PM

The Grande Prairie RCMP say they got a report at 10:03 a.m. from the Grande Prairie Composite High School, saying an unknown person told staff there would be a shooting at the facility.

Following the threat, the Comp along with Peace Wapiti Academy (PWA) were placed on a hold and secure for most of the day as police assessed the situation in the area.

A preliminary investigation by the RCMP has determined the phone calls originated from the United States. Currently, police say there is no risk to staff and students.

The hold and secure at both schools were lifted just after 1:30 p.m.

Mounties say they take threats like these very seriously as they can have a significant impact on students, staff, families and the community.

This is the second time this school year Grande Prairie Composite has been the victim of a threat from the United States.

Back in September, someone called in a bomb threat to the school. On that day, staff and students were told to muster safely at Legion Field and were eventually dismissed for the day as a precaution.
