Wembley arena still busy following reopening, fundraiser kicks off Thursday

The Wembley and District Ag. Society Recreation Coordinator says the ice has been busy at Source Energy Arena in Wembley since reopening back in November 2021.

The facility suffered a significant fire in June 2020 which resulted in the building being forced to close. However, with the ice back in, Natasha Boileau-Byrne says the number of residents using the rink is similar to pre-fire times.

“It’s been great!” she expressed.

“We have had some great feedback for the ice side of things. It has been really busy with hockey and we have had a great turnout for our shinny and public skate as well. Our learn to skate also just started.”

With the arena still under construction, Boileau-Byrne suggests there is still lots of work to be done.

“Right now, our ice and our gym are open, but our concession and anything downstairs in our multi-purpose is not finished yet,’ she said. “I believe by May they are hoping to have everything completely open.”

With that, the Wembley and District Ag Society is hosting a Chase the Ace raffle fundraiser to help raise money to go towards any construction costs over the next few months.

The Wembley and District Ag. Society will get 50 per cent of the money raised.

Boileau-Byrne explains the way Chase the Ace works is residents who choose to buy a $10 raffle ticket are entered into a draw.

“If your ticket gets drawn that week, you win 20 per cent of the proceeds from the weekly amount that was earned,” she said.

In addition, she says those who purchase tickets will get to pull one card from a deck of 52 cards.

Draws will take place every week until the Ace of Spades is chosen.

“If you happen to pull the ace of spades, then you also win the jackpot, which will grow every week, 30 per cent gets contributed to that every week,” she explained.

Tickets are on sale from February 17 to March 15.

Tickets can be purchased at the Source Energy Arena from February 17 – March 15. A full list of hours can be found on their Facebook page.
