Grande Prairie to host Grand Slam of Curling event in October

Feb 22, 2022 | 11:11 AM

The Grand Slam of Curling will be making a stop in Grande Prairie from October 18-23.

What is being dubbed as the Hearing Life Tour Challenge will bring some of the best curlers in the world to the Swan City.

The City’s event and entertainment manager Catherine Ridgeway says the Grand Slam of Curling event was originally set to come to Grande Prairie in 2020 and 2021 however due to the pandemic, organizers were forced to postpone the event.

“Sportsnet did a process in 2020 to put the event on at the Coca-Cola Centre and we had agreed at that time and it’s just been delayed because of COVID,” she explained.

“But now that we’ve announced the tour, it is coming in 2022.”

Ridgeway explained why the event will be taking place at the Coca-Cola Centre rather than a facility like the Bonnetts Energy Centre.

“It was actually Sportsnet that specifically wanted the Coke Centre, they needed a double ice surface to hold this particular event, so they were really only interested in the Coca-Cola Centre for this one.”

Ridgeway adds there will be a plethora of activities for residents to take part in off the ice that weekend.

“The Events Entertainment team with the City of Grande Prairie are going to partner with the Grande Prairie Curling Club to put the event on,” she said. “There’s going to be a social house and lots of fun activities going on around the Coca-Cola Centre around that time.”

Grande Prairie is no stranger to hosting large curling events. The city hosted the Alberta curling provincials this past January and also hosted the Scotties Tournament of Hearts in 2016.

The stop in Grande Prairie will be the second of six events scheduled for across Canada. The full schedule can be found here.
