Trial dates set for 228 kg meth smuggling case at Coutts
LETHBRIDGE, AB – Two weeks have been scheduled for a trial to take place for what border officials at Coutts say is the largest seizure of methamphetamine ever at any land border crossing in the country.
In Lethbridge Court of Queen’s Bench on Monday, Justice Vaughan Hartigan agreed to have a judge-alone trial for Amarpreet Singh Sandhu, 39, of Calgary.
It is alleged that Sandhu crossed the Coutts border on Christmas Day 2020 with a semi-truck hauling produce.
The vehicle was pulled aside for additional inspection, and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) claims that they found 228.14 kg of meth with an approximate street value of $28.5 million.
