Alberta to allow delivery of cannabis by retailers, AGLC exits online sales

Mar 8, 2022 | 5:46 PM

Starting March 8, licensed retailers in Alberta can sell cannabis online and then provide delivery.

At the same time, Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) is exiting the online cannabis sales game following recent amendments to the Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis Act.

“Updating Alberta’s approach to online legal cannabis sales gives Albertans more choices, provides retailers new revenue opportunities and encourages industry innovation and diversification,” says Kandice Machado, CEO, AGLC.

AGLC will continue to prioritize health and safety for Albertans and ensure all online cannabis retailers meet federal and provincial cannabis legislated requirements and regulations.”

In order to offer delivery via online sales, a retailer must operate a physical store and receive an endorsement from AGLC. Retailers will also be responsible for ensuring their online platforms meet all AGLC, municipal, provincial and federal legislation, including age verification. AGLC will be inspecting sites on an ongoing basis.

Additionally, approved retailers must prominently display several pieces of information so Albertans can easily identify a site that has been endorsed by AGLC for legal cannabis sales. This includes:

  • all of the licensees’ licence numbers
  • all of the licensed premises names and physical addresses
  • public education materials and a link to AGLC’s cannabis licensee search page on aglc.ca

All retailers must also include CannabisSense content on their website. CannabisSense.ca was launched by AGLC in January 2022 to provide information to Albertans on how to identify legal cannabis products, illegal sites, and common cannabis-related health concerns and questions. It is similar to DrinkSense and GameSense.
