Grande Prairie records 62nd COVID-19 death, adds 10 recoveries

Grande Prairie recorded its 62nd COVID-19 related death for March 8. The death was one of seven reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours, bringing the province’s COVID-19 related death toll to 3,986.

Meantime, the City of Grande Prairie recorded five new COVID-19 cases and 10 recoveries for March 8. There are 86 active cases in the city.

The County of Grande Prairie recorded four new COVID-19 cases and eight recoveries for Tuesday. There are now 88 active cases in the county.

Alberta added 552 new cases from 3,069 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 17.9 per cent. There are currently 6,878 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of March 8 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 84 active (-6)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 88 active (-4)
  • MD of Greenview: 31 active (-7)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: 14 active (+2)
  • Saddle Hills County: three active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 92 active (-4)
  • MD of Fairview: 33 active (-4)
  • MD of Smoky River: 10 active (-)
  • Big Lakes County: 64 active (-1)
  • Clear Hills County: four active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: six active (-)
  • Northern Sunrise County: eight active (-)
  • Mackenzie County: 45 active (-2)

The province saw hospitalizations increase to 1,087 (down 19), with 78 of those patients in the ICU (up one).

In the North Zone, 130 people are in hospital (same), six of whom are in the ICU (same).

So far, 90.1 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 86.6 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.
