High Prairie RCMP investigating gang-related, four charged

The High Prairie RCMP General Investigation Section (GIS) is investigating a gang-related shooting that resulted in four people being charged.

Mounties say the shooting took place on Feb. 10 in Whitefish Lake First Nation.

The investigation led to a search warrant being obtained for a residence and executed on March 4.

The warrant led to the following items being seized:

  • A quantity of crystal methamphetamine, heroin and fentanyl
  • A sawed-off .22 calibre rifle, sawed-off 30-06 rifle and sawed-off Winchester Model 840 shotgun
  • A quantity of ammunition
  • Four false government identifications and counterfeit Canadian currency

Twenty-three-year-old Shawn Evan Cardinal of Whitefish Lake First Nation is charged with:

  • Discharge firearm with intent
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
  • Possession of a scheduled substance (x2)
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Pointing a firearm
  • Possession of weapon for a dangerous purpose (x2)
  • Assault causing bodily harm
  • Fail to comply with release order (x2)
  • Criminal negligence causing bodily harm

Cardinal was remanded into custody and is set to appear in High Prairie Provincial Court on Mar. 14.

Twenty-six-year-old Nicholas Anderson-Kootenay of Edmonton is charged with:

  • Possession of weapon contrary to order (x6)
  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
  • Possession of a scheduled substance (x2)

Anderson-Kootenay was released on bail and is scheduled to appear in court on Mar. 28.

Thirty-four-year-old Lacey Jane Laboucan of Whitefish Lake First Nation is charged with two counts of possession of a scheduled substance and is set to appear in High Prairie Court on Apr. 11. She was released on an appearance notice.

Twenty-four-year-old Mara Catherine Morgan is charged with:

  • Careless use of a firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm (x2)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime (x3)
  • Fail to comply with release order
  • Possession of counterfeit money

Morgan was released and is scheduled to appear in High Prairie court on Mar. 28
