Mighty Peace Teachers Convention kicks off on Thursday

Mar 10, 2022 | 9:50 AM

Around 1,500 teachers from across the Peace Region are set to take part in the annual two-day Mighty Peace Teacher’s Convention on Thursday.

Once again, this year’s convention is being held online.

Mighty Peace Teachers Convention association vice president Debbie Harris says the event is planned a year in advance, which led to the decision to hold it virtually again this year.

“Last spring, there was still a lot of uncertainty, and it is very difficult to suddenly switch an in-person convention to a virtual one,” she said. “So the Alberta Teachers Association made that decision for all conventions in the province to be virtual.”

Harris says there are around 191 different sessions for the teachers to choose from.

“(The sessions) are either pre-recorded or live via Zoom and teachers can attend sessions in a lot of content-related areas, as well as sessions related to their profession.”

Harris adds after facing numerous issues surrounding wellness and mental health over the past two years they hope this year’s conference will help the teachers reconnect to their passion for teaching.

“They get to attend some sessions that will make them laugh, that inspire them, and hopefully they will have something new to share with their students on Monday morning.”

With report cards and parent/teacher interviews taking place recently or in the near future, Harris feels this year’s conference will be a good chance for the teachers to focus on themselves.
