Bull sale, Farm Family of the Year tribute to highlight Friday at the Agri-Show

Mar 11, 2022 | 6:00 AM

The Northern Classic Bull Sale will be among the highlights on a busy Day 3 Friday at the Foster’s Peace Country Classic Agri-Show.

JayDawn Farms and Willow Creek Simmentals will have 68 head on offer at the 19th edition of the sale.

Jason McQuaig with JayDawn is glad to be back after a long absence.

“It’s been two years. We held our sale, but we were under the COVID restrictions before.”

“We’re really looking forward to seeing all of our customers, new and old, (and invite them) to come out and join us down here at the bull sale.”

The sale starts at 1 p.m. at the Drysdale Centre. McQuaig says there have been some strong markets for cattle.

“The people that managed to get enough feed, I think the outlook is going to be really good for the future cattle sales all the way through until fall.”

He adds last year’s drought forced some people to sell some animals and cut back on their cow herds.

“A lot of people got a bunch of different rations, whether it was molasses and straw (or) pellets. I think a lot of the guys managed to find enough feed. Some of it (was) pretty costly.”

“For us, we managed to get enough feed put together to protect our cow herd and carry on, and, hopefully, 2022 is a better year.”

McQuaig says it was good to see the snowfall we had this winter and thinks it is a good start. He is hopeful that there will be lots of rain and a good crop this year.

Friday evening, there will be a banquet to salute the Vavrek family of Vavy Valley Farms of Sexsmith, the 2022 County of Grande Prairie Farm Family of the Year. Michael Vavrek talked about what an honour the award was in an interview with us in January.

“My family and myself are very excited and thrilled to receive this great award. It means so much to so many farm families in our area to be acknowledged for this title”

“(We have been) trying to make our county a better place to live and farm, so we definitely thank the county for this great honour.”

Skijoring, where people ride on skis or snowboards while being pulled by a horse, will go at 7:30 Friday night at Gordon Badger Stadium.
