LETHBRIDGE, AB — Southern Alberta District RCMP confirm charges have been laid against a former member of the Lethbridge Police Service (LPS).

63-year-old retired LPS officer William (Bill) James Kaye of Lethbridge has been charged with sexual assault, criminal harassment, and breach of trust.

The charges stem from an investigation that started in January 2021, when Coaldale RCMP received a report of a sexual assault that occurred in Lethbridge.

Since the incident allegedly took place in the city, the jurisdiction for the investigation was with the Lethbridge Police Service. However, as the suspect identified in the investigation was a retired LPS officer, the investigation remained with the Alberta RCMP at the request of the LPS.

The Southern Alberta District RCMP General Investigation Section (SAD GIS) says the incidents are alleged to have taken place between December 2017 and April 2018.

At that time, the suspect was employed with the Domestic Violence Action Team in Lethbridge.

Kaye turned himself in to Alberta RCMP on March 10, 2022. He was arrested, and after a judicial hearing, Kaye was released on conditions to appear in Lethbridge Provincial Court March 28, 2022.

Since this matter is now before the courts, no further details surrounding these charges can be provided.

The investigation continues, and the SAD RCMP GIS unit is asking the public to come forward if they have any further information.

Anyone with information about this investigation is asked to contact Coaldale RCMP at 403-345-5552. You can also email KSADGIS@rcmp-grc.gc.ca or contact Crime Stoppers at www.P3Tips.com or 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
