Alberta added 593 new cases from 3,166 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 18.7 per cent. There are currently 6,449 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

The province saw hospitalizations decrease to 989 (down 12), with 70 of those patients in the ICU (same).

In the North Zone, 130 people are in hospital (up one), four of whom are in the ICU (same).

COVID-19 related deaths fell by 12 over the last 24 hours after a correction from Alberta Health.

So far, 90.2 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 86.6 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.

The province announced on Wednesday that it will begin updating COVID-19 numbers only once per week now as opposed to every weekday starting on Monday, March 21. Daily updates will continue for March 17 and 18.

The decision was made in accordance with other provinces throughout the country.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will speak once a week every Wednesday to provide Albertans an update on the situation.
