Grande Prairie records five COVID-19 recoveries, four new cases

The City of Grande Prairie recorded five COVID-19 recoveries and four new cases over the last 24 hours. There are 66 active cases in the city.

In the County of Grande Prairie, there were four new COVID-19 cases and five recoveries identified. There are now 42 active cases in that region.

Alberta added 619 new cases from 2,729 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 22.6 per cent. There are currently 6,552 active cases in the province.

Provincial officials say with the rollout of rapid tests to most households, the actual number of new COVID-19 infections in the province is likely higher than what is being reported.

Active case totals, as of March 16 among Peace Region municipalities, are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 66 active (-1)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 42 active (-1)
  • MD of Greenview: 17 active (-2)
  • Birch Hills County: one active (-)
  • MD of Spirit River: 15 active (-2)
  • Saddle Hills County: three active (-)
  • MD of Peace: 38 active (-2)
  • MD of Fairview: 11 active (-4)
  • MD of Smoky River: 13 active (-1)
  • Big Lakes County: 47 active (-1)
  • Clear Hills County: four active (-1)
  • County of Northern Lights: one active (-)
  • Northern Sunrise County: seven active (+1)
  • Mackenzie County: 24 active (-1)

The province saw hospitalizations decrease to 967 (down 22), with 67 of those patients in the ICU (down three).

In the North Zone, 124 people are in hospital (down six), three of whom are in the ICU (down one).

Six more COVID-19 related deaths were reported by Alberta Health, bringing the provinces COVID-19 related death toll to 4,019.

So far, 90.2 per cent of eligible Albertans aged 12 and older have received at least one dose of the vaccine, while 86.6 per cent of those eligible have received at least two doses.

The province announced on Wednesday that it will begin updating COVID-19 numbers only once per week now as opposed to every weekday starting on Monday, March 21. Daily updates will continue for March 17 and 18.

The decision was made in accordance with other provinces throughout the country.

Chief medical officer of health Dr. Deena Hinshaw will speak once a week every Wednesday to provide Albertans an update on the situation.
