Millions of dollars worth of MDMA “precursor” seized in Calgary

Mar 18, 2022 | 12:57 PM

CALGARY, AB – Officers say they have prevented what could have been upwards of $5 million worth of MDMA or ecstasy from hitting the streets in Alberta.

That comes after ALERT and the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) have seized “massive quantities” of an MDMA precursor that was being imported into the country.

On January 21, 2022, CBSA intercepted two packages of a known MDMA precursor, which was destined for a Calgary address. The packages were sent from China and totalled more than 53 kilograms.

Then on February 4, 2022, ALERT Calgary executed a search warrant at the address of the intended recipient. Officers seized an additional 68 kilograms of MDMA precursors along with falsified importation documents.

ALERT Calgary Inspector Shawn Wallace says, “The only known application for these chemicals is to produce MDMA and ecstasy. This seizure prevented tens of thousands of doses, worth millions of dollars.”

Combined, approximately 121 kilograms of the chemical, which is considered a Class A precursor under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act, was confiscated.

Yoseph Tamerat Metyeke, 33, is charged with importation of a controlled substance and production of a controlled substance. Additional charges are pending.
