World Water Day

Peace Region celebrating World Water Day

Mar 22, 2022 | 6:00 AM

March 22 is World Water Day.

The theme this year is “Groundwater – Making the Invisible Visible.”

Adam Norris with the Mighty Peace Watershed Alliance says people don’t often think about groundwater unless they have a well.

“It is important in maintaining our lakes and rivers as well,” he said.

“It is all connected — so hoping just to raise awareness to the general public around groundwater — the role it plays in water and all of our lives every day.”

He adds drought last year had some impact on groundwater levels in the Peace.

“In our area, up in the Peace Watershed there (are) definitely some small declines we are noticing in the aquifers or the groundwater that we saw monitoring on,” he added.

“Generally, groundwaters respond over a longer-term, so to multiple years of drought or multiple years of high water.”

The Watershed Alliance will join other groups across Alberta in hosting a webinar today to mark the occasion. Norris hopes anyone taking part gets a better understanding of groundwater.

“A better understanding of how our actions on the landscape affect groundwater and a good understanding that groundwater is a shared resource like all of our water resources,” Norris stated.

“So, what we do to groundwater affects everyone’s ability to use it and also affects the ability of people to use either lakes or rivers because they are all connected.”

The webinar will start at 1 p.m. and registration can be made through Eventbrite
