Camp Tamarack to open for first time since summer 2019

Mar 29, 2022 | 12:56 PM

For the first time in over two years, Camp Tamarack located just south of Grande Prairie will be welcoming campers back this summer.

The non-profit camp was last open to campers back in August 2019. It had been forced to close for the last two years because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

As a result of the pandemic, the camp was forced to survive off grants and donations from the community.

Vice President of Camp Tamarack Ken Belke says he and his staff are eager to welcome everyone back to the camp.

“It’s going to be exciting,” he said. “It’s been a tough two years and we’re really excited. We’re planning and working towards this summer and excited about being open.”

Belke adds they’re also thrilled to be able to offer this service to the community once again.

“We had about 400 people at camp the last summer we operated,” he explained. “It’s well used, it’s a great facility, and has been around for over 40 years. We really feel it makes a difference in a lot of people’s lives.”

Because there hasn’t been a summer camp at Camp Tamarack in two years, Belke tells EverythingGP they’re looking for staff to help run the camps throughout the summer.

“We’re hiring staff, getting all of our programs in line, and getting ready to go,” he said.

“I just encourage people to go to our website. You can find out about the jobs we have opening, we’ve added a page where you can donate if you want to for the camp and we just want to let people know we’re excited about getting the doors opening and hearing the sound of children in the trees there.”
