Powers to remove politicians and to propose provincial policies come into effect in April

Mar 30, 2022 | 2:48 PM

LETHBRIDGE, AB – Albertans will soon have a greater ability to be involved in the democratic process.

Two pieces of legislation are set to come into effect on Thursday, April 7, 2022 – the Recall Act and the Citizen Initiative Act.

The Recall Act allows Albertans to initiate a process that could lead to removing and replacing elected officials, including MLAs, municipal politicians, and school board trustees during their term.

Justice Minister Tyler Shandro says holding those in government offices accountable is one of the UCP’s key commitments.

“This legislation strengthens democracy in our province by helping Albertans to be directly involved with it. Albertans can now hold elected officials in Alberta accountable outside of the four-year election cycle.”

The Citizen Initiative Act would empower Albertans to propose legislative, policy, or constitutional actions on issues that affect them.

Premier Jason Kenney says the implementation of these two items reflects promises being kept.

“The Citizen Initiative Act and Recall Act give Albertans the ability to directly set the priorities for the government and hold elected officials accountable throughout their term. These are among the most important democratic reforms in Alberta history.”

Financing rules have been established for both pieces of legislation as well.
