Women’s rugby community growing in Peace Region

Apr 2, 2022 | 6:00 AM

With the snow melting many at the Grande Prairie Rugby Football Club are turning their attention to the upcoming rugby season.

One of those people looking forward to the season is Mark Rogers, the head coach of the Grande Prairie Rugby Club’s women’s team.

He says people are eager to get the season going.

“We have over 50 women who have committed themselves to play this season. We have entered two teams (18 and up) in the premier division and we also have a team in the second division as well,” he explained.

Rogers says interest in playing rugby this season has grown so much, that it draws people from across the Peace Region just to play on the weekends.

“We’ve got people from northeast British Columbia that are travelling to play with that club as well. It’s a very dispersed team, we have so many people out in a rural area and now we have people coming from across the border to play for the club,” Rogers said.

“It’s going to be an exciting year.”

In the regular season, the Grande Prairie Rugby Club will play 11 games this season against teams from Edmonton, which will see them play eight home games.

The schedule has not been finalized, but Rogers is hopeful that by them having so many home games, they will be able to continue to grow the sport.

“This schedule is really going to help promote rugby in our region because there are so many home games,” he said.

All of the home games will be played at the Grande Prairie Rugby Club this season.
