City Hall to look at a healing centre for Grande Prairie

Apr 5, 2022 | 6:00 AM

A presentation from a local man on drug use he has seen on Grande Prairie streets has led to City Council asking administration to look at the potential to establish a healing centre.

The presenter had asked about leasing a piece of land to put up a healing teepee where people could talk to an elder.

The motion approved by council at Monday’s meeting would have city staff reach out to stakeholders in the region.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says it is important that something like this be Indigenous-led.

“I don’t think anyone around the council table would attest to being extremely knowledgeable in this.”

“Although we’re passionate, it’s better for us to support the Indigenous and First Nation community in this type of process, rather than to assume we know what the best process would be.”

Clayton adds this would tie in well with the city’s efforts to work on the municipal aspects of Truth and Reconciliation.

“We have identified (that) there are some areas that municipalities can work in Truth and Reconciliation and so a healing centre may be one of those opportunities that council could consider.”

“It goes well in the process of council’s intent to improve the relationship and be part of Truth and Reconciliation.”

Clayton explains what stakeholders might be included.

“(The) council discussion was when directing administration, was to reach out to organizations such as the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre. They already have a healing garden. A healing tent could quite well work alongside that.”

“However, there are other Indigenous groups including Horse Lake First Nation (which) owns land in the city.”

A report would come to a future standing committee meeting.
