GPAC ready to host U16 AAA provincials

Apr 6, 2022 | 10:25 AM

The GPAC U16 AAA Storm will be hosting the provincial championship April 7-11.

The four-day tournament will bring together the best U16 AAA hockey teams in the province to the Swan City to decide who will be named the best team in the province.

The Fort Saskatchewan Rangers, Canadian Athletic Club, Calgary (AAA) Flames, Calgary Royals and GPAC Storm are all participating in the tournament.

GPAC team manager and tournament organizer Sarah Hoath tells EverythingGP the Coca-Cola Centre will be filled with almost non-stop hockey over the four days.

“It’s going to be some great hockey. We have the top two teams from the northern division and southern division and it’s the best of the best in the league.”

In order to qualify for provincials, each team other than Grande Prairie had to qualify for their division conference finals.

Hoath says there will be three games a day being played at the Coca-Cola Centre.

“Thursday they’re going to start at noon. We have our opening ceremonies at 5:30 p.m. There are going to be three games on Thursday. Friday, same thing. The bronze medal game will happen at 10 a.m. on Sunday and the gold medal game is happening at 1 p.m.”

It was last year when GPAC learned they will host provincials.

Hoath feels having the opportunity to host provincials is a great opportunity for GPAC and Grande Prairie.

“We had to do the bid and we were fortunate enough to win the bid. We haven’t hosted here in Grande Prairie for this division since 2017. We thought this would be a great opportunity to host them here in Grande Prairie.”

The games will be live-streamed on Hockey TV throughout the entire weekend.

You will have to purchase a tournament pass in order to watch in person.

It’s $10 for a day pass and $25 for a weekend pass.
