Grande Prairie Composite dismissed for remainder of day due to unsubstantiated threat, PWA students return to classroom

Apr 6, 2022 | 10:15 AM

UPDATE:

The Grande Prairie RCMP advise the public that Grande Prairie Composite High School will be closed for the remainder of the day due to the RCMP’s investigation of a threat made towards The Comp around 9:30 a.m. this morning.

PWA will remain open for classes for the remainder of the day. The RCMP had originally said the school was closed for the day, however, the Peace Wapiti Public School Division says police gave them the all-clear to continue with classes for the day.

Police say a preliminary investigation has determined the origin of the threat was from a phone call from the United States. Police believe there is no risk to students or staff at this time.

The Comp has laid out guidelines for how its students will be dismissed for the day:

  • Students who walk to school or have their own vehicle and their keys are being dismissed immediately
  • Buses are currently being dispatched to transport students who ride the bus
  • Parents may begin to pick up their children beginning at 10:45 a.m. at Legion Field using Willie De Witt Drive
  • Any student not able to enter their residence will remain at the school until arrangements can be made with parents

Original story

The Peace Wapiti Public School Division and Grande Prairie Public School Division says both PWA and Grande Prairie Composite High Schools have been evacuated due to an unsubstantiated threat made towards The Comp.

Students and staff have been evacuated and a police investigation is underway.

Parents and students are asked to not go to the school at this time.

Another update will be provided once more information becomes available.

This is the third time this school year The Comp and PWA have received a major threat like this.

In September, a bomb threat was received at The Comp, which forced the school to evacuate for the day.

A shooting threat was made toward the schools back in February of this year, both schools were forced into a hold and secure.
