EDMONTON, AB – The provincial government is taking action against a trio of Russian regions.

Premier Jason Kenney has written letters to the governors of the regions, announcing that the Alberta Government is terminating all relations with them.

“Russia’s invasion of Ukraine is an outrageous act of aggression that has led to appalling war crimes, the death of thousands of civilians, and the displacement of millions. Putin’s campaign of terror cannot be tolerated and the entire civilized world must use every tool to stop it.”

Kenney adds that “Ending this relationship with Russian states is just one small way that Alberta can register our disgust at the actions of the Russian Federation.”

The regions are as follows:

  • Tyumen Oblast
    • Relationship began 1992
    • Estimated population of 3.69 million as of 2018
  • Khaty-Mansi Autonomous Okrug
    • Relationship began 1995
    • Estimated population of 1.53 million as of 2010
  • Yamalo Nenets Autonomous Okrus
    • Relationship began 1997
    • Estimated population of 522,904 as of 2010

This is the first time that the Government of Alberta has terminated relationships with sister regions.

According to the government, sister province relationships are meant to help promote economic development-related activities and cross-cultural awareness, as well as cooperation in culture, education, sports, agriculture, technology, governance, and tourism.

Back in February, the province pulled all Russian liquor from stores in Alberta.
