RCMP remind motorists to wear seat belt to avoid fines, cut down injuries

Grande Prairie RCMP are reminding motorists about the importance of wearing their seat belts when operating a motor vehicle.

According to Sgt. Shawn Graham with the Grande Prairie RCMP, it’s not just you as the driver that you have to worry about.

“Motorists are responsible for ensuring both themselves and passengers that are underaged are using proper occupant restraints,” he explained.

“Failing to wear your seat belt could result in a fine under the Highway Traffic Act.”

In Alberta, failing to wear a seat belt can result in a fine of $162.

Graham says for the most part, he finds drivers in the Grande Prairie do a good job of complying with this law.

“It is just a reminder for motorists to wear their seat belts,” he explained.

“The proper use of safety restraints greatly reduces the risk of serious injury and harm in the event of a motor vehicle collision.”

Some tips to remember include making sure the seat belt is not twisted at any spot, and that the lap belt portion is positioned low across your hips.

The shoulder belt portion should always be across the center of your chest, and never under your arm or behind your back.
