Governing Coalition Avenir Québec wins Montreal-area byelection, Liberals take fifth

Apr 12, 2022 | 9:47 AM

MONTREAL — The leader of Quebec’s official Opposition says she’s disappointed her party finished fifth in a Montreal-area byelection on Monday.

Liberal Leader Dominique Anglade told reporters today the party needs to do a better job of getting its message out to voters ahead of the October general election.

Shirley Dorismond, a nurse who works in addictions and mental health, won the Marie-Victorin riding for the governing Coalition Avenir Québec with about 35 per cent of the vote.

Pierre Nantel, the candidate for the Parti Québécois who had represented the area as an MP with the NDP, came second with 30 per cent. The PQ had held the riding for decades.

Québec solidaire was third with 14 per cent, while the Quebec Conservative Party received about 10 per cent.

The byelection was called after Independent Catherine Fournier in November was elected mayor of Longueuil, a city in the riding.
