New officials needed for upcoming football season

Apr 12, 2022 | 6:00 AM

With the snow melting and the grass re-emerging, the Grande Prairie Football Officials Association is in the process of recruiting new officials for the upcoming year.

Officials are asked to work both in the spring and fall when football is being played throughout the region.

Head of the Officials Association Greg Remple says they’re willing to accept anyone willing to help.

“We always need new people and as many people as possible to make the football possible in Grande Prairie. We pretty much accept anybody who would be interested in officiating.”

“Male or female, young or old, we provide training and there’s a bit of remuneration for your time and effort,” Remple explained.

Remple tells EverythingGP the commitment for officiating is light for most and they will work out a schedule to best accommodate your other plans.

“We cover everything from the little kids all the way to the Grande Prairie Cowboys that play in the Alberta Football League. The peewee season runs in May and June and runs on Saturdays, same with the Grande Prairie Cowboys,” he said.

“In the fall we have bantam and high school leagues who usually play on Fridays or Saturdays. If we have enough officials, it usually means a commitment of maybe one day a week of coming out to a game.”

Remple says right now they have 11 officials signed up for a season and hopes they can boost that number up to 15 or 16.
