Grande Prairie records 68 new COVID-19 cases over last seven days

Apr 13, 2022 | 4:08 PM

Alberta Health says over the last week, Grande Prairie recorded 68 new cases of COVID-19, down from 78 the week prior.

In the County of Grande Prairie, there were 15 new cases confirmed since last Wednesday.

It is not known how many active COVID-19 cases there are in the city or county because of the move to weekly numbers.

The last week saw Alberta add 6,181 new cases following the completion of 23,399 tests, resulting in a test positivity rate of 26 per cent.

Across the province, hospitalizations grew by 63 in the last week to 1,053, while the number of patients with COVID-19 in the ICU grew slightly by four to 48.

In the North Zone, 108 people are in hospital, two are in the ICU.

There were 38 COVID-19-related deaths reported across Alberta last week. This brings Alberta’s COVID-19 death toll to 4,141.

Full details and COVID-19 numbers can be found on the province’s website.

While there has been an increase in hospitalizations related to COVID-19, Health Minister Jason Copping says this is not surprising because of the transmissibility of the B.A.2 variant.

“Wastewater virus levels are trending up in Calgary and Edmonton and in many of the smaller centres being monitored, although, not all,” he explained.

“We’re seeing more virus circulating as in other provinces. This is not surprising given the transmissibility of B.A.2 and the increase in contact with people resuming their normal routines. So far, we are not seeing any large impact in terms of severe outcomes. We may see some further increases in the next few weeks, but we are prepared for it.”

Copping added with immunity built up from vaccination and recent exposure to Omicron, they don’t expect the healthcare system to get hit as hard as prior waves.
