Charges withdrawn in High Level murder case

Alberta Justice says charges against a man charged in a High Level murder case have been withdrawn.

Jesse Beckles had been facing first-degree murder and failure to comply with an undertaking counts.

He was charged after the August 2019 shooting death of Nathan Kim.

RCMP said at the time that they were called out on August 9, 2021, at around 2:30 p.m.

Kim was located in an alley near 105 Avenue and 98 Street in High Level and later died from his injuries.

Peace bond for the accused after weapons seized after a disturbance at a school

Alberta Justice says a man facing a dozen charges after an incident at a Grande Prairie school has entered into a 12-month peace bond.

Robert Howarth had been facing several firearms charges.

Peace bonds are protection orders from a court where, according to the website for the federal justice department, someone might commit a crime but there is no reason to think one was actually committed.

Peace bonds come with a number of conditions like limiting contact and keeping the peace.

Grande Prairie RCMP said at the time that they were called out just after 2:30 p.m. on June 8, 2021, to what they described as a disturbance at a school in the Avondale area.

A suspect was located near a vehicle. Police seized a loaded handgun, two handgun magazines with ammunition, a machete and an axe after searching the same vehicle..

A search that same night at a County of Grande Prairie home turned up 28 more firearms, ammunition and magazines.

An email from the Crown prosecutor’s office to EverythingGP says that the prosecutor decided that, based on the evidence available, there was no reasonable likelihood of conviction and opted for the peace bond instead.

Jail time after dangerous road incident

An Atikameg man charged after a vehicle police said at the time was “driving dangerously and swerving into oncoming traffic” in Sherwood Park last fall has been given jail time.

Jericho Grey was handed a 180-day jail sentence after pleading guilty to a count of operation of a vehicle while prohibited. He was also given 90-days consecutive to that for dangerous operation of a vehicle and a 30-day consecutive sentence for possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Slave Lake and High Prairie RCMP said at the time that on September 16, 2021, they spotted Grey and a woman leaving Slave Lake in a vehicle. Grey was wanted on armed robbery and firearms charges out of High Prairie.

Mounties followed the vehicle into Sherwood Park. They said both people in the vehicle tried to run away but were caught with the help of the RCMP Police Dog Service.

The woman was released without being charged.
