Long-time town councillor and Sexsmith volunteer to be recognized as hall is renamed in his honour

April 27 will be a special day for the Town of Sexsmith, and in particular for long-time resident and community supporter Isak Skjavelund.

The main hall at the Sexsmith Civic Centre will be renamed in his honour that day, followed by an open house in the Legion club room.

Sexsmith mayor Kate Potter says Isak has been a significant part of their community since moving there from Norway back in 1951.

“He has owned a business in our region, he has been on town council, he has been a part of the Sexsmith Elks, the legion,” she explained.

“He started and continues to be a part of the Citizens on Patrol in Sexsmith. He has volunteered for many different organizations doing bingos, fundraising…. you name it.”

Skjavelund served 17 years on Sexsmith town council.

Potter says he has been one of Sesxsmith’s main supporters and cheerleaders.

“If there is something he can do for the community, or support within the community, he definitely wants to see it happen – and has been that way his entire life here. He is very community-minded and connected now obviously to lots of different people – whether it is through various different roles or family or just the community itself.”

Isak and his wife will be at the dedication ceremony, which is by invitation only.

It begins at 1 pm on April 27 at the hall, which Potter says is where a majority of the community’s residents are familiar with him from.

“Our Elks take care of that hall and manage it, and Isak was one of the ones who was instrumental in getting that hall built,” Potter explained.

“As well as caring for it over the last number of years. He retired out of that a couple of years ago but people still associate him with that hall.”

The Skjavelund’s, along with several current and former members of Sexsmith town council, as well as other municipal leaders from the region, will also be in attendance at an open house that afternoon from 1:30 to 3:30 pm in the Legion club room.

The public is invited to attend the open house and congratulate Isak for his overall community spirit of volunteerism with many organizations in Sexsmith.
