Town of Beaverlodge to celebrate Geoff Walker April 26

The Town of Beaverlodge has announced plans to celebrate curler and former resident Geoff Walker on April 26.

The town has decided to hold a parade for Walker which will run across 4th Avenue starting at 2:30 p.m.

Over the course of his career, Walker has appeared in 11 Briers, three Men’s World Curling Championships and one Olympic Games.

He’s won a total of four medals at the Brier, three medals at the World Men’s Curling Championship, two from the World Junior Curling Championships, and a bronze medal at the 2022 Olympics in Beijing.

Mayor Gary Rycroft says they felt now was the right time to celebrate Geoff’s accomplishments.

“He’s our first Olympian from Beaverlodge playing for Canada, so we’re extremely proud of everything Geoff’s done,” he explained.

Hockey player Chris Schmidt, who played for Germany in the 2010 Vancouver Olympic games, is the other olympian to originally hail from Beaverlodge.

Along with the parade being held on April 26, the Town of Beaverlodge will be presenting Walker with a Key to the Town. They will also be renaming 4th Avenue to Geoff Walker Way.

Rycroft says it was an easy decision to rename 4th Avenue to Geoff Walker Way, as they want Walker to be remembered for his accomplishments.

“Councillor (Gena) Jones brought it up and it was pretty much decided within seconds that was the way to do it,” he explained.

“He’s got an incredible track record from the world juniors, to the Brier and Olympics. It’s something to mark him in our history, so we figured it would be a nice way to do that.”

As Walker grew up in Beaverlodge, Rycroft said he lived across the street from his parent’s house.

He tells EverythingGP it’s amazing to see what he’s been able to accomplish in his curling career.

“Geoff was a pretty quiet guy growing up, but there was always something special there,” said Rycroft.

“You always wondered what was going to happen, but I guess now we know.”
