City and County celebrating Earth Day 2022

Apr 22, 2022 | 6:00 AM

Events will be held Friday in the Teresa Sargent Hall at the Montrose Cultural Centre to celebrate Earth Day. All residents are invited to attend the drop-in event from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m.

Jessica Foley with the City says there is going to be a lot going on at the event.

“On the outside concourse, we are hosting residents who own electric vehicles. They are going to be parked there for the event and they are going to be engaging residents on all the benefits and amazing things that owning an electric vehicle has,” said Foley.

“We’re also going to have a recycle trailer from the County and one of our (City of Grande Prairie) electric buses!”

A number of vendors and booths will be inside the hall, all focusing on the environment and Earth Day.

As a part of Earth Day celebrations, the GP Grows program will be back for its third year. Foley says it will be set up as a seed bar.

“We have thirteen different varieties of seeds for residents to come out and choose what seeds they want to get growing this year,”

“It’s such an exciting and successful event, to have residents be able to get seeds at no cost to them and grow their own vegetables.”

Foley adds that anyone who gets seeds will get information on how to take care of them and be successful in growing.

The seeds available are asters, corn, beans, oregano, beets, zucchini, tomatoes, marigolds, wildflowers, peas, cucumber, sunflowers and spinach.

Foley said a variety of flowers were included to protect the health of pollinators in the region and globally.

“That’s why we have the sunflowers, wildflowers, asters and marigolds in there so that there’s something for you to grow to get to your plate and then there’s also seeds in there that help keep our pollinators happy and healthy.”
